A pushy, gimmicky, or preachy speaking style doesn’t work very well.
They alienate and possibly offend your audience.
A style that attracts people instead of repelling them.Instead of pushing ideas on my audience, I always look for ways to make my audience attracted to what I say.
I learned a few things over the past ten years that have made my presentations more magnetic.
Below are 4 of them.
1. Tell your story (to relate with your audience). Most people share their story to prove their credibility. I don’t believe in that approach. I believe that you automatically have credibility the moment you step in front of the group. Instead of fighting to get credibility, share your story to relate and connect with them. That way they will be drawn to you and your message.
The other day I heard one of the Magnetic Speaking Trainers, Julia Beauchamp saying at a corporate training: “I am Italian, so I tell a lot of stories and I speak with my hands.” At that moment I can see the audience smile and relax. That’s the moment they fell in love with her. Julia knew that it would be better to tell her story instead of starting with credibility facts such as her being a storytelling expert at Magnetic Speaking, or having 2,500 hours of stage time. Sure the facts are impressive, but the story is magnetic.
2. Be interested in your topic. One of the things I learned from every mentor I had is to find a way to rekindle my passion for my subject. You have to find a way to do the same. We all lose our passion and get jaded every once in a while. The trick is “Passion is Contagious, ” and if you show passion for what you are talking about, people will be drawn into your topic at an unconscious level.
3. Structure your presentations based on your audience’s thinking styles. Usually, we create presentations based on one thinking style. That makes our presentations magnetic to those who think like us and repelling to those who don’t. If you want to attract more people to your ideas and projects, then you need to utilize their thinking style when you communicate.
Invest time to look into the 4MAT theory of thinking. It will help you understand how others think and how to create appealing content to a wide range of audiences.
If you don’t have time to do the research yourself, we spent the past ten years applying these concepts to modern presentations, and you can learn the same system at the Magnetic Messaging Bootcamp.
4. Develop your belief statements and share them with others. People like to be around those who have convictions.
Here are three quick things to keep in mind when developing your belief statements:
1 – Focus your belief statements on your area of specialty. If you are in customer service, create belief statements about customer service, if you are in sales then you focus on sales, etc.
Here are some of my belief statements about public speaking:
I believe that bad public speaking kills careers
I believe that bad public speaking kills companies
I believe that everyone can become great at public speaking
I believe that public speaking skills are a must for every professional
2 – Always back up each statement with an explanation
If I share the following as my belief statement: “I believe that bad public speaking kills careers,” then here is what I use to back it up:
“Because right now the biggest glass ceiling for your career is NOT related to your racial background, your sexual orientation, your gender, or your age. The biggest invisible barrier holding you back at work is the level of your ability to stand up, speak up, and influence others with your ideas.”
Does this make sense?
3 – Create as many belief statements as possible (feel free and feel brave to share some of your belief statements in the comments below; would love to see them)
If the pushy or preachy style of presenting works for you, then you don’t have to change it. I find that the magnetic method is easier, lighter, and more efficient in the long run. Just applying the four things above will make a huge difference in your presentation style.
